APPLICATION OF THERMAL REMOTE SENSING METHOD IN DETECTING AND MONITORING SUBSURFACE COAL FIRE IN KHANH HOA COAL FIELD, THAI NGUYEN PROVINCE

Abstract

The Khanh Hoa open coal field in Thai Nguyen province is one of the largest in Vietnam. In recent years, there has happened subsurface coal fire in this area due to many reasons, including outdated mining techniques and unauthorized mining, etc. Subsurface coal fire is a dangerous phenomenon which seriously affects the environment by releasing toxic fumes, reigniting forest fires and causing subsidence of surface infrastructure. This article presents our study of the application of LANDSAT multi – temporal thermal infrared images in detecting coal fire. The results obtained in this study can be used to monitor fire zones so as to give warnings and propose solutions to prevent coal fire.
