Abstract

Agriculture in general and rice production in particular play an important role in reducing poverty in Thua Thien Hue (TTH) province. In recent years, a lot has been invested in agriculture and this has become a key economic sector in the provincial development strategy. Moreover, Thua Thien Hue province is focusing on developing high quality agriculture products to respond to the increasing market demand. Economic efficiency of high quality (HQ) rice production has been proved by many models in terms of theory and reality. However, farmers still hesitate in transferring all their cultivation land to HQ rice production. In stead, they still keep the majority of agricultural land to cultivate normal crops that can ensure their food security. In addition, in case of HQ rice production all farmers are facing many difficulties in distribution and consumption due to market and thinking issues.

A value chain analysis is supposed to be the current approach of this study in order to find out the current HQ rice value chain (VC) of Quang Vinh commune and the financial position of each stakeholder. This study also attempts to consider all potential opportunities to improve the current value chain, which may help to narrow the gap between farmers and the end consumers and the small scale farmers may increase their income through HQ rice production.
