Abstract
The change in land use and land cover is relatively different because land use is identified by its purpose, while the land cover is the status of land use in real time. It is difficult to assess and monitor land use changes in a large area with traditional methods. In contrast, the assistance of remote monitoring means, such as remote sensing images from the satellites, is required. This study applies Landsat images and GIS to assess the variation in land cover types in Le Thuy district, Quang Binh province, in 2010, 2015, and 2020. The result indicates that using remote sensing and GIS data produced land cover maps with a Kappa coefficient of 0.71 and 0.89. The land cover of non-agricultural land use increased during 2010–2020, while that of agricultural land use decreased. A positive trend of forest land cover in sandy areas near the sea was observed from 2010 to 2020.
