Abstract

We evaluated the results of ecosystem-based adaptation to climate change (EbA) in agriculture in the Tam Giang-Cau Hai Lagoon system in Thua Thien Hue. Three main methods were used to collect data: in-depth interviews with key informants (n = 10), focus group discussion (n = 4), and household interviews                     (n = 60). The results show that in the Tam Giang-Cau Hai ecosystem, there exist the following sub-ecosystems: Lagoon sub-ecosystem, Along lagoon sub-ecosystem, Home-garden sub-ecosystem, Sandhill sub-ecosystem, and Sandy soil agricultural sub-ecosystem. Eleven EbAs were identified and applied by households, in which planting mangroves, agroforestry, converting drought-tolerant crops, crop rotation/intercropping and crop diversification are those with a high potential for development; the conversion of intensive to integrated aquacultural production and salty rice areas to lotus cultivation, livestock diversification, livestock production toward smart climate-adaptation agriculture, and lagoon-based community tourism are potential, but culturing fish in moving cages is little potential. In the future, mangrove forests, agroforestry, suitable crop conversion, and adjustment of aquacultural production forms are the EbAs that need to be promoted and replicated.
