The role and level of community participation in sustainable tourism development in the coastal lagoon areas of Hue city

Abstract

This study delves into how local residents participate in sustainable tourism development in the coastal lagoon areas of Hue City. Through a survey of 315 households and interviews with experts, it clarifies the roles and levels of community contribution, as well as the benefits and challenges they face. The findings indicate that 49,84% of households participate at a basic level, primarily by providing products and services. However, the community-based tourism model has yielded significant benefits, including increased income, improved infrastructure and job creation. It has also contributed to preserving traditional cultural values and raising environmental awareness. Notably, the community demonstrated strong resilience to shocks like the COVID-19 pandemic, with many households quickly recovering and growing stronger. Based on these findings, the study proposes several solutions for more sustainable community tourism development: enhancing local residents' capacity, diversifying tourism products and refining policies to encourage active participation from the community.
