Abstract

“Nep Cut” is a local specialty glutinous rice variety of Quang Ngai province, characterized by its long growing season, good adaptation to mineral-rich hot swamps, and distinctive economic and cultural value. This study was conducted to evaluate the agrobiological characteristics and grain quality of the “Nep Cut” glutinous rice variety, as a basis for conservation and development. Survey results from 60 farming households showed that the variety was grown once a year using a self-seeding method with a seeding rate of 2.5 kg/500 m². Over two cropping seasons (2023–2024), the study described 47 agrobiological indicators of the variety. The average actual yield reached 31.91 quintals/ha (ranging from 30.73 to 33.10 quintals/ha). The percentages of brown rice, white rice, and whole rice were 66.63–76.85%, 62.97–71.33%, and 48.87–58.88%, respectively. The amylose content was low (1.57–2.14%), protein content ranged from 7.44 to 8.19%, gelatinization degree from 4.30 to 5.90 points, gel strength reached 89.40–100 mm, and the rice grains had a characteristic mild aroma. The research results provide important scientific data for creating tables describing characteristic traits and gene pool records, laying the groundwork for the restoration, conservation, and sustainable development of the “Nep Cut” specialty rice variety.
