Abstract
Agricultural land is increasingly threatened by urbanization, particularly in rapidly developing areas. This study evaluates agricultural land loss in response to urbanization in eastern Ho Chi Minh City during the period 2015-2025. The analysis was based on land use status maps from 2015, 2020, and 2025. GIS technology was used to standardize land-use classes and analyze land-use changes. Agricultural land loss was then quantified using three indicators: Agricultural Land Loss Rate (ALLR), Annual Agricultural Conversion Rate (AACR), and the Contribution Index of urbanization to agricultural land loss ( ). The results show that agricultural land decreased from 4,407.9 ha in 2015 to 3,457.9 ha in 2025, representing a reduction of 950.1 ha. Most converted agricultural land was transformed into built-up land (874.3 ha) and transportation land (198.9 ha). The exceeded 95% in both study periods, indicating that urbanization was the main driver of agricultural land loss. These findings provide a scientific basis for land management and sustainable urban development in the study area.
