Livelihood strategies of farming households in Hue’s peri-urban areas in the context of urbanization

Abstract

This study uses a sustainable livelihood analysis framework to assess the livelihood strategies of farming households in the peri-urban areas of Hue city in the context of urbanization. The results show that mixed livelihood strategies (agricultural and non-agricultural activities) are a popular and suitable choice for households in peri-urban areas. Although the remaining agricultural land area is very limited, almost all households still maintain agricultural activities as a form of “livelihood insurance” against risks from the non-agricultural labor markets. This suggests that local authorities need to pay more attention to the issue of land – use planning and policy of peri-urban agriculture development in the future.
