Abstract

This study focused on analyzing the use of verb-noun collocations in argumentative essays among English-majored students at the Department of English, Hue University of Foreign Languages, Vietnam. Specifically, the study compared the appropriateness of verb-noun collocations used in argumentative essays of Vietnamese students with that of native speakers based on the two criteria: Mutual information >=3 and Frequency >=6. Surpringly, the findings showed that Vietnamese students used a higher number of appropriate verb-noun collocations in their essays than native speakers. However, interviews further revealed that Vietnamese students preferred to search for online writing pieces of the same topic and imitate collocations and ideas rather than make their own choices for lexical phrases and ideas, which, to some extent, helped explain the reason for their good use of verb-noun collocations in their essays.
