Abstract
Congratulation is one of the fundamental purposes of language communication that exists within any society or ethnicity. The speech act of congratulating also contributes to shaping the etiquette and culture of individuals as well as the broader culture of a nation. This research focuses on examining congratulation strategies in Vietnamese and American English to identify the similarities and differences in the usage of these strategies within the communication of the two languages. Qualitative, descriptive statistical and contrastive methods have been employed, drawing on data from subtitles of Vietnamese and American movies and television series, to tally the incidence and frequency of congratulation strategies in both languages; thereby uncivering new findings that contribute to the theoretical discourse in the field of linguistic behavior research.
