Abstract
By rebirth of the archetypal journeys, John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath and Jack Kerouac’s On the Road have reimagined the experiences of wandering Americans against the backdrop of the distinctive historical and societal contexts of the United States in the first half of the 20th century. In exploring the mobility culture in modern American novels, this article focuses on discussing the similarities and differences in the archetypal journeys and their rebirth in the works of John Steinbeck and Jack Kerouac through the comparative method of decontextualization and socio-historical approaches. Consequently, it reveals specific messages about history, era, and culture that the two authors successfully convey through unique narrative techniques.
