Abstract

Heritage tourism has garnered increasing attention from scholars and tourism practitioners. By adopting the content analysis method, this study systematically reviews and integrates the extant body of knowledge across 134 articles from various SCI journals which stream on heritage tourism from 2000 to 2021. Our review indicates that most articles were published in the current decade. The results also reveal that research in this field has a geographical bias and mainly employs qualitative methods.  In-depth analysis of the literature identified some main categories, namely authenticity, tourism experience, heritage tourism development, and identity. The review proposes the theoretical and practical values as well as the directions for future research.
